Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) is a nonprofit organization that believes food is the foundation for all other progress. To a starving child, hope can only truly begin once a reliable source of nutritious food has been established.
On August 7, 2021, DC14’s Young Lions organized a group of members and their families to attend one of FMSC’s food packing events. Feed My Starving Children has created three special MannaPack™ meals to combat malnutrition in areas without access to other consistent food options. Our members took on the roles of measuring out ingredients, assembling and sealing them into serving packets and helping to box and stack shipments in the warehouse for distribution. By the end of the event the team had packed 95 boxes, which amounts to 20,520 meals. That helps 56 individual children not have to worry where their next meal will come from for an entire year.
At the end of the event one of our very own brothers, Dan Roach’s, daughter was awarded a special sticker to recognize her for always being ready to help and for providing all her amazing dance moves to keep everyone’s energy up.

Painters District Council 14 is proud to once again partner with Rebuilding Together® Metro Chicago. We have expanded our annual rebuilding day volunteer event to encompass 100 days of donated skilled labor for one hundred Chicago Heights and South-Side Chicago homes in need!
25 years ago, John Spiros, Jr. and Rebuilding Together® Metro Chicago committed to a partnership of assisting Chicago’s residents, whether long-time homeowners interested in preserving their investment, or new ones trying to make their homes safe and livable. Those efforts continue today as the DC14 Apprenticeship Program donates equipment and members of DC14 selflessly turn out on the weekends to donate their skill where they are needed most, despite the challenges still facing us with COVID. Measures are being taken to ensure necessary safety protocols are being met.
Rebuilding Together started in 1973 as a small group of people in Midland, Texas realized their neighbors’ homes had fallen into disrepair and they could not afford to fix them. They volunteered their time and skills to rehabilitate the residences. Seeing the beneficial impact of their work as an ongoing mission they officially formed a group called Christmas in April, with the intent of performing similar repair and rehabilitation work in their community every April.
News of their charitable work spread slowly, but eventually achieved national recognition. As it gained momentum, the mission expanded beyond providing annual service in April to bringing together partners and teams of volunteers to help improve neighborhoods throughout the year. More residents could now enjoy lives of warmth, safety and independence. They eventually opened the national office in 1988 and became Rebuilding Together.
Today, Rebuilding Together has grown into a premier nonprofit community revitalization organization.
With corporate and community partners like DC14 and its’ members they repair homes, restore communities and revitalize lives. By focusing on specific neighborhoods each year, and collaborating with other community revitalization initiatives, Rebuilding Together Metro Chicago has been able to maximize and sustain its positive impact on the lives of local community residents. Their local affiliates and nearly 100,000 volunteers complete about 10,000 rebuild projects nationwide each year.

It’s that time of year, where the DC14 Women’s Committee held its annual book drive to donate books to local nonprofit Open Books. We are proud of our association with Open Books whose cooperative efforts with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program support literacy throughout Chicagoland by providing free books to children in need. Age-appropriate titles are selected by a panel of experts and sent directly to the child’s home. The books arrive by mail every month, often the first mail a child receives, from birth until the child turns five.
Thank you once again to all our generous donors: Painters District Council 14 members, families, friends and our partner allies. With vaccinations on the rise opening up contributions, the drive was very productive this year receiving over one thousand donations! Your willingness to share a book or other media from your personal collection allows an organization like Open Books to make a positive tangible impact on our youth. Establishing literacy at such a young age is crucial to the educational development and long-term productivity of any child.

Don’t wait for the next drive, Open Books takes donations year-round of books in good, resalable condition of almost all genres: fiction, nonfiction, craft books, cookbooks, children’s books, and more! But they also accept LPs, CDs and DVDs in good playable condition, so everyone likely has something they can contribute to this worthwhile effort! Each week, they deliver thousands of books to schools and nonprofits across Chicagoland, and they give away 2.5 books for every 3 they sell. Open Books operates as a 501(c)3 nonprofit, meaning all donations are tax deductible.
